MCKINLEYVILLE After keeping thing close in the first period, the Del Norte High girls varsity basketball team could not keep up with McKinleyville Wednesday night, losing 58-33 on the road.

The Warriors fell to 10-15 overall and 1-6 in the Big 5. The Panthers improved to 7-0 in the Big 5 and 18-5 overall.

Warrior head coach Buzz McCulloch said the team was down only 13-7 the end of the first quarter. But the squad had trouble making its shots as the Panthers were able to break the game open. In the third quarter, McKinleyville outscored Del Norte 22-11.

Sophomore Lauryn Lesina led Warrior scorers with 10 points. Kaylie Rook had seven points and Michelle Stacey had five.

Friday night Del Norte finishes the season at home against Eureka at 7:30 p.m. The Warriors defeated the Loggers on the road last month for their first Big 5 win in two seasons.
