Warrior girls win in tourney due to forfeit

REDDING The Del Norte High girls varsity basketball team earned a victory at the Enterprise Tournament in Redding Friday because of a forfeit.

The opponent, Las Plumas, decided to return home due to weather concerns and forfeited the game. The forfeit win improved Del Norte to 8-8 for the season. Thursday night, the Warriors lost to Oroville 44-26.

Del Norte head coach Buzz McCulloch said tournament officials told him if they wanted to play a game, the Foothill High freshman team was available for a scrimmage. The Warriors accepted and defeated Foothill 36-20.

McCulloch said the game gave him a chance to play many of his bench players for significant minutes and said it gave them an oppurtunity to gain experience.

andquot;It gave them a chance to get in there and show what they can do,andquot; he said, and added it gave him a way to see who can help the team, especally with Big 5 Conference play stating next week. The team will face Fortuna at home on Thursday in the squads first home game of the season. They will have a total of only four home games.

Michelle Stacey led Warriors scorers with 11 points Lauryn Lesina had seven points while Krista Haban and Baille MCculloch each chipped-in five points each.

Roxanne Dowd had four points and Robyn Suzuki and Lisa Daniels had two points each
