BRENTWOOD Del Norte High junior grappler Roger andquot;Bronkandquot; McCovey continued his strong early season showing, winning a major Bay Area tournament this past weekend.

Competing in the Lou Bronzan Tournament at Liberty High School in Brentwood, McCovey went 5-0, earning first place in the heavyweight (275) division.

He was never truly threatened in the tournament, despite facing some of the top wrestlers in the North Coast Section, defeating his opponents in the semifinals and finals 9-4. His opponent in the finals, Andrew Benjamin of Jesuit, is ranked sixth in the state, while McCovey is ranked fourth in the state in the heavyweight division.

andquot;It feels pretty good,andquot; McCovey said, adding it is a positive step in his ultimate goal of making and winning state.

For the season, McCovey is 11-0 in his matches.

For McCovey, who made state last year and is considered one of the top wrestlers in his division in the state, it was nice to do well at the tournament at Liberty High. Last year, he placed second.

And, McCovey did not start wrestling until recently because he was still in the middle of the football playoff run, which did not end until the first week of December.

McCovey said it has taken time to get from football to wrestling shape and said he is still working on getting back to his ideal wrestling shape. andquot;I'm getting close, but I'm not quite there yet,andquot; he said.

Del Norte head coach Aaron Schaad said McCovey has been andquot;dominantandquot; this year, and commended him for doing what it takes to be a great wrestler. Schaad said McCovey works hard, is a great athlete and is dedicated to being the best wrestler he can be.

Although he is a heavyweight, Schaad said McCovey normally places either first or second when the team does sprints.

andquot;He's a hard worker,andquot; Schaad said. andquot;He's doing well.andquot;

Another Del Norte wrestler that did well was Joey Kravitz, who went 4-2 in the 140 pound weight division.

While he did not place, Schaad said he defeated some top wrestlers and did well against the No.1 wrestler in his division at the tournament before losing to him.
