FERNDALE The Del Norte High girls varsity basketball team defeated Ferndale 35-30 on the road Tuesday night to improve to 3-4 for the season. Warrior head coach Buzz McCulloch said while it wasn't the prettiest win, he and the girls were glad to come away with the victory in a very defense-oriented game. McCulloch said Del Norte struggled with its shots all night, but the defensive effort kept the Warriors in the game. Up by one point with less than a minute left, senior Robyn Suzuki made a key steal and was able to get the ball down the court to junior Natasha Short, who was able to score a basket. Suzuki also blocked a shot shortly before the end of the game to help seal the win. Ferndale dropped to 2-3 for the season. Short led Warrior scorers with 16 points and sophomore Lauryn Lesina chipped in nine points. In junior varsity action, Del Norte won its first game of the year 49-18 against Ferndale. Lexie Nelson had 13 points and Katy Suzuki and Casey Walsh had eight points each.
