After a two week absence from playing at home, Del Norte High took care of business at Mike Whalen Field on Friday, soundly defeating Arcata 35-7 in Big 5 Conference action.

The victory improves the Warriors to 3-0 in the Big 5 and 5-0 overall. This was the 17th straight Big 5 win for the team dating back to the 2004-2005 season.

andquot;It was a good win for us,andquot; head coach Lewis Nova said. andquot;We executed our game plan and made the plays that we needed to.andquot;

After rushing for an astronomical 506 yards against Fortuna last week, the Warriors still ran for a more-than-solid 289 yards, compared to the Tigers 53 yards on the ground. Arcata is 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

Warrior running back Trevor Rook had an outstanding contest, blasting his way for 187 yards on 16 carries and scoring three times.

With quick cuts to the open holes created by a dominating offensive line, Rook weaved and plowed his way to a terrific game. Wide receiver Cody Hoffman also stood out, with his top-notch route running skills and the ability to pluck the ball from the air, even when double teamed. He finished with 72 yards on seven catches and two touchdowns.

As they have done every game this season, Del Norte took control from its opening kickoff drive, going down the field with ease in front of a packed crowd of Warrior faithful.

Using a deadly combination of gaining yards on the ground and being able to throw it down the field, the Warriors found themselves down to the 18-yard line. Quarterback Chad Freeman found Hoffman in the right corner of the end zone and fired away. Despite two guys on him, Hoffman snatched the ball and got the Warriors on the board.

In the second quarter, Rook ran the ball in twice for scores, once from a yard out and another on a 17-yard drive where he was able to follow good blocks and ran through defenders into the endzone.

By the end of the half, Del Norte had a comfortable 21-0 lead on the Tigers,

At the start of the second half, the Tigers got on the scoreboard, but did not get in after that, although they came close. In the fourth quarter, they were right on the goal line at the one on first down. Del Norte used its quick and aggressive defense to deny them a second touchdown.

Next Friday is a big game for the Warriors, who travel to league rival Eureka.

andquot;We need to play our best game.andquot; Nova said, adding that Eureka, especially on the road, always presents a challenge, and his team needs to give a 100 percent to achieve the win.
