The Del Norte High girls tennis team had a strong start to the Big 5 Conference season on Thursday, soundly defeating Fortuna on the road 8-1. The Warriors opened the tennis season last week at a tournament in Redding. Emma Wilson, the Del Norte No.1 seed, defeated Karin Knapp 6-3, 6-0. No. 2 seed Rebecca Cink downed Niki Green of Fortuna 6-4 7-5. Warrior Jennifer Gustafson defeated Rachel Dvorak 6-2, 6-1. Jaden Olson, the No 4. seed for Del Norte, loss to Robin Palmer 3-6, 1-6. Ashleigh Speaker of Del Norte downed Katie Huddleston 6-2, 6-3. No. 6 seed Rachel Cink won her match against Taylor McCulloch 6-0, 6-0. In doubles action, Wilson and Rebecca Cink defeated Knapp and Green 8-3. Gustafson and Olson won against Dvorak and Palmer 8-3. Kelsy Hintz and Rachel Cink defeated Huddleston and McCulloch. Head coach Jane Rumiano said she was quite impressed with her team's effort and said the girls have been steadily improving. She thanked assistant coach Kirk Olesen for his efforts in coaching the squad while she took a several week long trip to Greece. Del Norte next plays at home on Tuesday against St. Bernard's of Eureka. The matches begin at 4 p.m. at the high school tennis courts.
