The Del Norte High girls tennis team opened the season in challenging weather conditions at a tournament in Redding.
Assistant coach Kirk Olesen said the Warriors played some 65 matches during the tournament, which began on Friday and ended on Saturday. The squad had to play in scorching temperatures hovering around 105 degrees,with many girls having to play four or five consecutive matches in the heat, he said. Olesen said he was proud of the performances of the 15 girls participating in the event.
andquot;All the girls competed hard and played to the best of their abilities,andquot; he said, adding many strong performances were turned in.
Ten of the girls who made the trip were playing their first tennis matches against another school. Olesen said, andquot;They gained valuable experience for the upcoming season.andquot; Emma Wilson finished 3rd in her singles flight and Rebecca Cink, who was playing in her fist match for Del Norte, placed third in her singles flight.
Jennifer Gustafson placed 2nd in her flight, while Ashleigh Speaker placed 3rd, Alisa Rojas, 6th, and Jaden Olson and Deila paced 8th in their respective flights.
The doubles team of Wilson and Rebecca Cink finished in 5th in their flight.
Rachel Cink and Kelsy Hintz placed 8th, while Mollie McLoughlin and Miranda Duncan finished 5th, Megan Webb and Julia Tedsen finished in 7th in their flight, and Amy McLoughlin and Greta Windrum placed 8th.
Del Norte will next play on Thursday at Fortuna.
