What a difference a few years makes.

Two years ago, David Plechaty, now 11, did not win a single match as a member of the Del Norte Youth Wrestling team.

This year, he has lost only two matches and is heading to the state's freestyle wrestling competition in San Jose this weekend, along with 15 of his fellow team members that were chosen to take part.

andquot;I only lost two matches this year so I think I'll be able to place,andquot; Plechaty said.

andquot;It's been a complete 180 degree turn,andquot; coach Roger Boulby said.

After winning the league championship recently, Boulby said the team is ready to put its best foot forward in San Jose. Hopefully, he said, they will come away with some individual awards and perhaps place overall as a team. About seven years ago, the team won first overall.

andquot;I'm hoping to bring home some state medals,andquot; Boulby said. andquot;That's always the goal. But it's hard to say. California is one of the toughest states for wrestling in the U.S.andquot;

Ta-Tes Boulby, 7, Roger's son, has not lost a singles league match this year. Roger Boulby said he has a good chance to place and to potentially garner first in his division.

andquot;He doesn't like to lose,andquot; he said, adding that his son has excellent technique for his age and has a love and desire for the sport.

Another wrestler Roger Boulby believes has a good shot to place at state is Nicole Mattz, 9.

andquot;She's been wrestling for quite awhile,andquot; he said.

Colson Turner, 7, the son of one of the wrestling coaches, Jeremy Colson, is in his first year as a member of the team.

Boulby has been impressed with his natural ability and said he has a good chance to do well in San Jose.

andquot;He's a really good wrestler,andquot; he said. andquot;He's just tough and he's determined.andquot;

Turner said he is excited to head to San Jose and said he hopes to do well and receive medals. He said he understands the effort it will take to achieve his goal.

andquot;I have to work hard for them,andquot; he said.
