The Del Norte High baseball team broke out of its doldrums, gaining a 9-4 victory against Fortuna at home on Wednesday.

The win snapped a three game losing steak and gave the Warriors its first win in Big 5 Conference play. For the year, Del Norte is 7-8 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

andquot;I feel good that we won,andquot; coach Pablo Lorenzi said. andquot;I'll take an ugly win versus a pretty loss anytime.andquot;

In the first inning, Del Norte got on the board first by scoring three runs. In the fourth, Del Norte added four more runs to take a 7-0 lead.

The Huskies put two runs on the scoreboard in the fifth. In the sixth, Del Norte had two runs as did Fortuna.

Kevin Walsworth went 2-for-3 with a double, a single, two RBI's and two runs.

Justin Yslas went 2-for-3 with two singles.

Chad Freeman went 2-for-3 from the plate, with a run and two RBIs.

Evan O'Brien went 2-for-3 with two singles and two runs, while Matt Bray went 1-for 4 with two runs.

While Lorenzi was glad to get the win, there were a number of facets of the game he was not as pleased with.

A big problem he had with his team's performance occurred in the third inning. With no outs and the bases loaded, the Warriors fell victim to a triple play to end the inning.

andquot;We could have broke their backs,andquot; he said. andquot;We should have scored at least two runs.andquot;

He said this play and others on the field were andquot;sloppy,andquot; especially in terms of baserunning.

To Lorenzi, a consistent effort is needed if the team wants to remain competitive in the conference.

The Warriors next play on Saturday in doubleheader action at McKinleyville. The first game starts at 11 a.m.
