andquot;Rain, rain, go away, come back some other day,andquot; is something members of the Del Norte High varsity baseball team may be uttering to themselves this morning.
With rain possible today in Eureka, the Big 5 Conference opener against Eureka High could be canceled. The Warriors are scheduled to play two games starting at 11 a.m.
Head coach Pablo Lorenzi said that consistently rainy weather just goes hand-in-hand with living on the Northcoast and hopes the game will go on as planned.
andquot;We're really excited to play,andquot; he said. andquot;We're coming around as a team.andquot;
The Warriors, who are 6-5 for the year, have not played since April 5, when they defeated Brookings 3-2 on the road. Earlier in the year, the Warriors were soundly defeated by the Bruins 13-1 and were 0-4 to start the season, including losing its first three games at a tourney in Red Bluff.
While the team may have lost its first three games, Lorenzi now looks at those matches as a valuable tool to see the makeup of the squad and who could perform at the different positions.
andquot;It gave us a chance to see things we don't see at practices,andquot; he said. andquot;It was a feeling out tournament for us, where we could see who could play where. It was very helpful.andquot;
This is Lorenzi's first year back as coach since 2002, after being head baseball coach for several years.
Lorenzi commended his team for working hard and steadily improving as the year has gone on.
He believes if his team continues to give maximum effort, they have as good of a chance as anyone to do well in conference play.
andquot;They have the ability,andquot; Lorenzi said. andquot;But it's in their hands. They need to do the basic things well and fight for it.andquot;
Senior Ross Bertolini said the team is hopeful for a successful Big 5 Conference campaign and said Lorenzi has instilled discipline and a winning attitude to the team.
andquot;I think we can win the league this year,andquot; he said. andquot;We're playing well as a team.andquot;
Lorenzi has been using the extra time between games this week with long practices designed to help the squad improve it's fundamentals.
from fielding to hitting the ball more efficiently.
