For its first and only meet in town this year, the Del Norte High track and field team had a strong performance Wednesday at the Del Norte Track Meet.

Highlights included a pole vault jump of 13.7 feet by sophomore Taylor Duncan, who placed first. Head coach Scott Lindsay said it appears that the jump set a school record in the event.

Junior Kelsy Hintz also had a strong first place showing in the pole vault with an impressive vault of 12 feet, which is one of her better times. Her personal best is 12.3 feet.

Both competitors were well ahead of their nearest competition, Lindsay said.

Other highlights of the meet included the girls placing first in both the 4x100 and 4x300 meter relays.

Jessica Slayton took first in the high jump with a mark of 5.2 feet.

Hintz placed first in the 400-meter dash. Bailee McCulloch earned first place in both the 100 and 200-meter dash.

andquot;It's a great start to the year,andquot; Lindsay said about his teams second meet this season. andquot;It's great for the kids to do it on their home field.andquot;

When Hintz finished her jump, an ecstatic look came over her face as the crowd cheered her on.

Duncan said it was an exciting feeling to know he did so well in the pole vault.

andquot;It's nice, but I wished I got 14.3 (feet),andquot; he said. andquot;When I was going up I got a feeling I was going to make it.andquot;

Duncan was so pumped up that once he made his jump, he did a backflip in celebration, he said.

On Friday and Saturday, members of the team will compete at the Stanford Invitational Track Meet in Palo Alto.

Duncan said he's determined to vault even higher at Stanford.

andquot;It was a good time, but I think I can top that,andquot; he said. andquot;Hopefully I can do better so I can place.andquot;
