The Del Norte High varsity baseball squads home opener on Wednesday ended in defeat, as Brookings cruised to a 13-1 victory.

The game was stopped after five innings because of the mercy rule.

Head coach Pablo Lorenzi said while it was a disappointing loss, he believes his team will improve as the season progresses. After the game, he told the Bruins head coach it andquot;will be a different teamandquot; he will see when the Warriors go up to Brookings to play in April.

andquot;We will be a better team,andquot; Lorenzi said. andquot;I don't think we showed what type of team we are today.andquot;

The top of the first, the Bruins, who were coming off a victory in their season opener on Tuesday, showed sharp bats, as Brookings raced to a 5-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first, Del Norte could not get on the board, with the team getting one hit from Kevin Walsworth.

Lorenzi said he felt the team played the first inning andquot;a bit too tight.andquot;

In the third inning, Warriors first baseman Matt Maltbie suffered a knee injury when he went for a ball.

Lorenzi said Maltbie told him he originally received the injury during a football camp. He did not return to the game and was on crutches after the contest.

The Bruins continued to hit at will, as well as keeping Del Norte from making any sort of a run, with Brookings increasing its lead to 13-0 by the fifth inning.

The bottom of the fifth, the Warriors got on the board on a sacrifice fly by Kyler Davis to bring home Vernon Clower.

Ross Bertolini also got a hit in the fifth.

For the game, Del Norte had three hits to Brookings 15. Starting Warrior pitcher Logan Lesina struck out three batters.

The Warriors fell to 0-4 for the season. The squad began the season last weekend with three games at a tournament in Red Bluff.

Lorenzi said at this time, the players needs to realize they need to play aggressively and with a killer instinct every inning if they want to stay in the game against a good squad like Brookings and win the game.

The Warriors next play a doubleheader on Friday at Ferndale.

The first game begins at 1 p.m. On Tuesday, the Warriors will play a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. at home versus Grants Pass, Ore.

Originally, the schedule had Del Norte playing the game on the road.

Lorenzi said it was recently changed because Del Norte had played at Grants Pass last year.
