John Valdez is pleased with the depth and talent he has at his disposal this year.

The first year coach of the Del Norte High junior varsity squad believes his team has the potential to have a solid season on the ball field.

andquot;I think we're going to be a good team this year,andquot; he said. andquot;I'm pumped about the season. They are coming around well.andquot;

In practices, the team has developed a solid grasp of baseball fundamentals along with having ability and a dedication to the sport, which bodes well for the season, Valdez said.

A nice luxury the Warriors have is having four left-handed pitchers at the team's disposal, which Valdez said will help a lot during the course of the season. The season starts today with a doubleheader road game at Fortuna beginning at 2 p.m.

Valdez said his top two pitchers in the rotation this year are Joe Finnagen and Mike Young, who are also good hitters and will play in the outfield on the days they are not on the mound.

A left-hander, Finnagan has good control and velocity on his pitches his coach said, and added both players have shown a lot of potential.

Kyle Higgerson is a promising young catcher who has shown a lot in practices, Valdez said. He said many members of the team have many years of experience playing in Little League, although it's quite a jump from high school from playing in Little league, he added, but said he believes his new players will be up to the challenge.

The Warriors play at home for the first time on Saturday versus McKinleyville in doubleheader action.
