A memorable football season was rewarded Friday as Del Norte High School received several Big 5 Conference honors, including having Trevor Rook named Most Valuable Player for backs and Dusty Thomas MVP for linemen.

The Warriors had eight players named to the conference's all-league White Stars and six players named honorable mention all-league White Stars.

andquot;It's a credit to the kids and the hard work they put in,andquot; Head Coach Lewis Nova said.

Vernon Clower, Chad Freeman, Cody Hoffman, Sherman Norton, Ryan Rook, Trevor Rook, Saxon Schultz and Dusty Thomas were named to the White Stars.

Phillip Bailey, Luis Berber, Ross Bertolini, Brennon Charlton, Matt Maltbie, and Roger McCovey were named as honorable mention White Stars.

Nova said Trevor Rook, who played running back and cornerback, was an extremely valuable component for his team.

andquot;He's improved so much from last year,andquot; he said. andquot;He was a solid running back. He made plays that were just remarkable.andquot;

One standout play, Nova recalled, was during the Warriors playoff game versus Marin Catholic and Rook was able to gain extra yards by pushing his hands on the ground, fighting for more yardage.

andquot;He made plays like that all year,andquot; Nova said.

Fortunately for Del Norte, Rook will return next year as a senior.

To Nova, Thomas, a senior, who played on defense as a linemen and on offense on the line, was a player he knew would do a good job each game.

andquot;He was a solid linemen on both sides of the ball and was one of the our senior leaders,andquot; he said.

While the team loses 11 seniors, many key players such as Freeman, Hoffman and Schultz will be back next year.

andquot;It gives us good building blocks for next year,andquot; Nova said. andquot;It really depends on what the young kids end up doing getting prepared for next year.andquot;

The Warriors (10-2), went undefeated in conference play and won two playoff games at home, going the furthest of any team in Del Norte football history.

The team's season ended in a difficult defeat to Novato High in the Bay Area last week.

On Monday, several players were already in the weight room, asking what thy need to do to be better players next year, Nova said.
