The Del Norte boys' squad started its run at the Yreka High School Tournament on the right foot, defeating Lassen High of Susanville 44-31 on Thursday night.

The girls' team was not as fortunate, losing 60-30 at the Yvonne Rocha Tournament in Fortuna.

Boys' game

The game started shortly before 9 p.m. because the previous contest ran long.

The Warriors (3-1), came out shooting consistently and playing tough defense, causing a number of turnovers and took a 13-4 lead into the second quarter.

The Warriors continued to maintain the lead 24-13 at the half.

In the third, Lassen was able to make the game more competitive, cutting the lead to as few as three points, as the Warriors struggled with turnovers and shots not going in, scoring only 8 points for the quarter, taking a 32-29 lead into the final period.

Could the Warriors step it up in the fourth?

Del Norte was able to jump to a seven point lead.

Senior Bryce Lund hit two free throws to give the Warriors a 11-point lead with about a minute remaining, as the team notched the win.

Lund lead the way with 16 points and went 4-for-4 from the line.

Del Norte will play Ashland (Ore.), at 7 p.m. tonight. Ashland defeated Etna High.

Girls' game

In Fortuna, The Warriors (3-2), fell behind early, with Anderson taking a 15-8 first quarter lead. By halftime, the score was 31-20.

In the third quarter, Anderson went on a 13-3 run and did not look back as the Redding area team coasted to victory.

A key problem, assistant coach Chris Poole said, was the Warriors could not score or play solid defense.

andquot;Our defense didn't show up,andquot; he said. andquot;We just couldn't buy a bucket. It was kind of a sluggish game for us.andquot;

The Warriors play the loser of the Bishop O'Dowd Arcata match at 4 p.m. today.

As of halftime of that contest, Bishop O' Dowd was winning by 20.

If the Warriors do play Arcata, a fellow member of the Big 5 Conference, it will be nice to get a head start playing a conference opponent, Poole said.

andquot; It helps to see how we match up aginst them, andquot; he said

Michelle Stacey led Del Norte scorers with eight points and four rebounds.
