The Del Norte High wrestling team had a very strong performance at a tournament in Eureka on Saturday.

The Warriors had 11 out of 12 varsity participants place and the team took second overall.

They trailed fellow Humboldt-Del Norte Conference opponent Hoopa, the defending HDN champ, by only 3 1/2 points.

"It went well for us," Del Norte assistant coach Clinton Schaad said.

The Warriors competed against 16 schools in a tournament that featured 300 wrestlers.

Two wrestlers, sophomore Jackson Evans at 134 and senior Austin Moore

at 220 went undefeated to take first place in their respective weight


Schaad said Evans did a great job using his strengths to gain points in his matches.

"He wrestled smart," Schaad said. "He stuck with what he knew and it went well for him."

Moore, who is in his first year wrestling at the high school,

dominated the proceedings. He had first round pins in all three of his

At 106 pounds Nicole Mattz finished in 6th place. At 126 pounds

Skylar Haddad earned a 7th place finish and Morgen Fischer came in 3rd.

At 145, Robert Boulby was 3rd and Hawk Mattz finished in 6th at 154

pounds. Lakey Coney was 5th at 160 pounds and Andrew Napier was 5th at

182. David Plechaty finished in 5th at 195 and Isaac Terry was third at


On Feb. 18, Del Norte will take part in the HDN championships in McKinleyville.

Schaad said that the good showing this past weekend gives the squad a confidence boost knowing they can compete with Hoopa.

Tonight is a big evening of wrestling for Del Norte as they face Hoopa once agin.

Del Norte, which is currently undefeated in the HDN will face both Hoopa and McKinleyville on the road tonight at Mack.

Last year, Del Norte went undefeated in the regular season in the HDN and is looking to repeat that feat again in 2012.
