Defeat both Hoopa and Mack in HDN conference action

The Del Norte High wrestling team earned two crucial Humboldt-Del Norte Conference wins on the road Tuesday night to remain undefeated in the HDN.

First the Warriors downed defending HDN champion Hoopa in McKinleyville 50-27. Later that night they faced the home team, considered a title contender this season, and downed the Panthers 49-30.

"It was two nice wins for us," Warrior assistant coach Clinton Schaad said. "The team has worked really hard to get to this point and we're getting better."

The Warriors also faced Hoopa in the Northcoast Classic Tournament in

Eureka on Saturday. Del Norte took second place in the event, 31andfrasl;2

points behind Hoopa.

On Tuesday at 132 pounds, Morgen Fischer won by 10 points and Jackson

Evans earned a technical fall victory at 138 pounds. Robert Boulby

earned a pin at 145 and at heavyweight Isaac Terry won.

Del Norte was close in the majority of the losses, Schaad said.

Hoopa had only nine team members compete Tuesday and had to forfeit the

remaining five spots.

"Beating Hoopa was nice," Schaad said. He hopes the team can continue

to do well against Hoopa when they face each other at the HDN

championships next month. Last year, Del Norte took second behind Hoopa.

Against McKinleyville, things started poorly for the Warriors as they

lost the first five matches. They won the last nine matches of the

"We persevered, worked hard and won the rest of our matches," Schaad said.

Boulby dominated again and pinned his second opponent of the evening.

"He wrestled well and was aggressive," Schaad said.

Evans earned an 11-3 win for his second victory of the night.

At heavyweight, Terry won his second match of the night by pin.

At 152 pounds, Hawk Mattz won an exciting 6-4 overtime match.

Schaad said that Mattz lost twice to the Panther grappler last week

at the Eureka tournament and defeated him earlier this season. It was

quite a battle and it was great to see Mattz pull out the victory,

Schaad said.

At 160 pounds, Lakey Coney won by pin. Eric Turner earned a pin at 170 and Andrew Napier won by forfeit.

David Plechaty won by pin at 195. At 220 pounds Austin Moore earned the victory by pin.

This weekend, the Warriors are at the Maria Carrillo Tournament in Santa Rosa.

On Tuesday, Del Norte ends the HDN regular season at Eureka. It will also face South Fork and St. Bernard's.
