DN wrestlers struggle at NCS

Young team shows promise for the future

Despite not having anybody place, the Del Norte High School wrestling team left it all out on the mat.

The Warriors tied for 26th out of more than a hundred teams represented at the North Coast Section Championships last weekend.

"It was a little bittersweet," said assistant coach Clinton Schaad. "We were pretty young going into it, and we won a lot of matches."

Five of the ten Warrior wrestlers that made it the NCS championship are sophomores, which is very "promising" for next year, Schaad said.

The 40-man brackets drawn up for each weight class can make or break a

wrestler, and the Warriors got some "rough draws," Schaad said.

Sophomore 132-pounder Jackson Evans went 2-2 in the tournament with

the toughest loss to Ward Beecher of Upper Lake, which knocked him out

of the tourney. The match was tied 3-3 when Beecher got two points for a

takedown late in the third period. Evans was able to escape for a point

and attempted a couple takedowns, but Beecher defended and won the

match 5-4. Beecher took 5th in the tourney.

Senior heavyweight Isaac Terry had similar misfortune. He went 2-2

in the tournament, losing his last match in the final seconds of the

third period. Terry was winning the match 2-1 when Roberto Perez of

Castro Valley took him down with just a couple seconds remaining to win

the match 3-2.

Sophomore Hawk Mattz, 138-pounder, had the best record at the NCS of

the Warriors with three wins and two losses.

Sophomores David Plechaty (195 lbs) and Robert Boulby (145 lbs) and

senior Austin Moore, (220 lbs) also went 2-2 in the NCS.

Senior Andrew Napier, 182 lbs, won one match and lost two this

weekend.

Sophomore Eric Turner (170 lbs) and seniors Morgan Fisher, (126 lbs)

and Noah Timoshenko, (120 lbs) went 0-2 in the tournament.

Schaad said it's tough to say goodbye to his seniors, but he's

looking forward to a strong young team next year.
