Boys team finish in third place at Icebreaker meet

The Del Norte High School girls track team took first place Tuesday at its opening meet of the season.

The girls team recorded nine first place finishes in events at the Brookings-Harbor High School Icebreaker meet on Tuesday. Four teams competed.

The 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams look faster this year than last, said Del Norte track and field coach Samuel Escobar. The two relay teams won the league championship in their respective categories last year.

"Our expectation for (the girls) is to win the league title again," said Escobar. "We have a good group of girls returning."

Jennifer Goacher raced for two individual first-place finishes in the

100- and 200-meter sprints and aided in two relay- team first-place

finishes.

Katelyn Rowe placed first in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles and also helped the two relay teams win their races.

Morgan Laney launched her shot put 36 feet and 3 inches, earning her a blue ribbon.

Kylee Bruder leapt 5 feet in her victory in the high jump.

The boys team didn't fare as well, earning a third-place finish.

"The boys team isn't as strong," said Escobar.

With nine fresh faces, they are going to need to work on getting their legs this season.

Still, the team took home four first-place finishes in individual events.

Dalton Alexandre won the 110-meter hurdles by a nose with a 18.42-second finish, a tenth of a second faster than second place.

Isaac Terry out-threw his peers with his discus landing 98 feet away in the sand.

Freshman Chad Bell jumped 5 feet 7 inches to a victory in the high jump.

And Victor Martinez threw himself 15 feet and 4 inches in the long jump for a victory.
