I often find it hard to believe how lucky I have been to be able to coach football for so many years.

It has given me the opportunity to work with so many great young men. Not only many who were great athletically, but also young men I would have been proud to call son.

Darren LaFazio, a 1991 graduate, was one of those. Like so many former Warriors, Darren continues to volunteer his time coaching our youth in football. He is an important part of the Warrior junior varsity coaching staff, working with those players who often go unnoticed, the lineman.

Coaching at any level is time-consuming, and this is especially true

at the high school level where it's almost a year-round job when you

consider the off-season conditioning programs.

Darren started his contribution as a Warrior during his freshman year, anchoring himself in the JV line.

As a sophomore he was part of the 1988 junior varsity team coached by

Louis Nova that went undefeated for the first time in 24 years.

When Darren started his junior year I got my first chance to be his

coach, and what a pleasure it was. He started on both the offense and

the defense and performed at a level that won him a White Star as a

first-team member on the Humboldt-Del Norte All League Team.

As a senior playing for first year head coach Louis Nova, Darren was again a White Star athlete.

You always knew when Darren took the field that you were going to get

a great effort. Having coached the Warriors from 1980 through 1989, I

find it fun at times to pick what would be my Dream Team of the 1980s.

Darren would definitely be a part of that mythical group.

He was one who coaches love to work with as he let his work ethic make him a real team leader. He was and is fun to be around.

Dick Trone writes on his reflections and the history of Del Norte

High Warrior sports. Trone, who played football for the Warriors and

graduated in 1951, had an illustrious career on the gridiron at Humboldt

State University. Trone was football head coach at Del Norte High for a

number of years before retiring.
