Varsity edges out Brookings; JV team sweeps rival

The Del Norte High School softball team nearly swept a double-header at Brookings this week, but ended up with a win and a tie.

Finally getting a chance to take the field Monday after several rainouts, the Warriors won the first game 11-6 and led 7-2 in the second game until Brookings came back with 5 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The game was then called on account of darkness.

Pitcher Chandler Davis went the distance for Del Norte in the first game, striking out nine batters.

On offense, shortstop Keirstyn Anderson hit two doubles, catcher

Amber Babbitt contributed a couple of hits and centerfielder Kathryn

Gustafson had a 3-run double during a game in which she "smashed the

ball," said coach Tom Moore.

In the second game, Cortney Penner's 2-run single started an

offensive onslaught as the Warriors scored 7 runs in the first inning.

Camryn Ridgley pitched all four innings of the game for Del Norte.

Playing in Crescent City on Monday, the JV softball team swept a double-header from Brookings, 12-0 and 29-3.

The Warriors' next game, weather-permitting, will be at home against Illinois Valley on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
