CR football hires new offensive coordinator

College of the Redwoods announced this week that Matt Tomlin has been named the new offensive coordinator for the football program.

Tomlin was the offensive coordinator at Windsor High School last season, helping the Jaguars to a perfect 14-0 season and a Division-II North Coast Section championship. The offense averaged 368 yards and 38 points per game.

"We're thankful to have him on staff and we think he's going to be a great addition to our football team," said CR head coach Tino Romero, who begins his second year at the helm. "We had an opportunity to sit down with Matt and it was clear to us that he has a great understanding of the game and what it takes to be successful."

Tomlin graduated from St. Bernard's in 1995 and played college

baseball at Scottsdale Junior College in Arizona and the University of

Nebraska.

He spent four summers playing for the Humboldt Crabs and played a

year professionally for the Springfield Capitals, an independent team in

the Frontier League.

Following his playing career, Tomlin joined the Fortuna Police

Department, and later transferred to Santa Rosa, where he currently

works and resides.

"I'm still a Humboldt County guy, that's never left me," Tomlin said.

"I think it's a really great way for me to come back. I learned a lot

from coach (Rob) Gatrell at Windsor and I'm coming in with the mentality

that offensively, we want to be tough, physical, hard-nosed and

aggressive. We're going to look to run the football first and play

action and screen pass off of that."

Gatrell, who took over at Windsor as head coach back in April, spent

several seasons before that as an assistant at Santa Rosa Junior

College, which is one of the premier JC football programs in California.

Tomlin spent two years as the head football coach at Piner High School before joining the Jaguars last season.

"I'm just really looking forward to the opportunity," Tomlin said. "I

was very impressed with coach Romero and his staff and the direction

they're heading and I'm just happy to be a part of it."

The Corsairs will host their first of two recruiting days on Saturday at the main Eureka campus.
