The Del Norte girls' track and field team took second place out of 22 teams at the 12th Annual Prefontaine Rotary Invitational in Coos Bay, Ore., on Saturday.

"The girls were outstanding," Warriors coach Samuel Escobar said. "We only took 10 girls, and they came in second place (against bigger teams). That's outstanding."

Marshfield High School, the meet host, swept the boys' and girls' team standings with 125 points and 171 points, respectively.

In the girls' team standings, Del Norte finished with 77 points.

The Warriors had three event winners in the meet. Senior Morgan Laney

continued her strong season with a winning throw of 38 feet, 7 inches

in the shot put.

"She's peaking at the right time," Escobar said. "This is where we

want her right now, on pace to shine at the (CIF North Coast Sectional

Meet of Champions)."

Kylee Bruder won the high jump with a personal-best, clearance of 5

feet, 4 inches to defeat Lindsey Wright of Reedsport on fewer misses.

The Warriors' 1,600-meter relay team of Kayla Costello, Hannah

Pickerall, Katelynn Rowe and Jennifer Goacher won in 4:10.00, a

12-second best over previous times this season, according to Escobar.

Rowe was singled out by Escobar as the athlete with the "most

outstanding day." In addition to her work with the 1,600-meter relay,

Rowe finished in second place in the 300-meter hurdles (47.30) in a

two-second personal best.

Bruder, Goacher, Rowe and Costello teamed up on Del Norte's second-place 400-meter relay team (51.58).

Escobar was also highly complimentary of Pickerall, who posted

personal records in the 400 (1:05.44, eighth) and the high jump (4-8,

tied for fifth).

Eight Del Norte boys also competed in the meet but none contributed a point toward team scoring.

The Warriors continue their season with a Humboldt-Del Norte League meet in Fortuna on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
