Reel Deal: Rock fish, ling cod starting Saturday

Adam Spencer, The Triplicate

On top of hunting for salmon, ocean sport anglers can start fishing for rock fish and ling cod north of Cape Mendocino on Saturday.

Anglers can keep a combined total of 10 rockfish, cabezon and greenlings per person per day. Two lingcod can be kept per person per day, three leopard sharks per person per day. Make sure to check a regulation handbook for minimum size limits. Copies are available online or at tackle shops.

The marine forecast shows ocean conditions calming down this weekend for the groundfish opener - a welcome change from the windy weather that has hampered ocean fishing in the past week.

Because the weather's been keeping a lot of folks off the water, it's hard to gauge how many salmon are out there.

"You send only two boats out, they get skunked, and then people don't

think there's any fish," said Rod Boone of Englund Marine in Eureka.

Fishing guide Tim Klassen, of Reel Steel Sportfishing in Eureka,

agrees that it's been pretty lonely out on the ocean, but perseverance

pays off.

"There's been a few small patches of fish and you can catch a few if

you get right on them," Klassen said. He plans on targeting groundfish

for the Saturday opener, due to the slower salmon catch.

The salmon report coming from Shelter Cove sounds much more productive.

Most of the fishermen aboard the 10 boats that went salmon fishing

Monday and 15 Tuesday came back with their limits, said Russ Thomas of

Mario's Marina in Shelter Cove.

Perch fishing from the beach and abalone hunting have also been prolific, Thomas said.

Perch fishing here in Crescent City is also still hot, according to

Chris Hegnes of Englund Marine in Crescent City. Hegnes also shared

reports of impressive catches of black cods and lingcods from the shore.
