2005 grad takes over Warriors girls tennis team

Max Sweeney has been named head coach of the Del Norte High School girls tennis team.

Sweeney graduated from Del Norte in 2005 after attending Serrano High School in Phelan, 75 miles northeast of Los Angeles, for three years. He was the No. 1 singles player for the Warrior boys in his lone season with Del Norte and later played for the club tennis team at San Francisco State University. He has obtained certification for coaching from the U.S. Professional Tennis Association.

Sweeney went to Del Norte High for an interview for the position and was "hired on the spot," he told the Triplicate.

"I knew they were looking for someone," he said of the position vacated by Sara Miller earlier this year. "(Del Norte athletic director) Bob Hadfield knows what I'm capable of."

Hadfield could not be reached for comment.

"He was a pretty aggressive player," said longtime girls head coach Jane Rumiano, under whom Sweeney served for two years as an assistant (2005andndash;06). "The girls haven't had a guy coach in a long, long time. I think he's going to learn a lot from them and they're going to learn from him."

"Jane has developed girls tennis into a successful program," Sweeney said. "I hope I can continue that. This is already a pretty strong tennis community. I want to rally some troops together."

Sweeney is holding tryouts for the 2012 Warriors team on Monday and Tuesday at noon at the Del Norte High tennis courts. Prospective players of all skill levels are encouraged to attend. Additionally, Sweeney is looking for anyone interested in joining with him as an assistant coach for the season.

Del Norte went 7-4 overall last season. The Warriors open their 2012 campaign on Saturday, Sept. 8, at home against McKinleyville.
