Teams using DN Warriors' schemes

The older boys played Friday night. The younger boys get their chance Sunday.

Del Norte Youth Football's season kicks off with robust early returns. DNYF was able to fill five youth teams for the 2012 season, each with at least 25 members.

The DNYF A Gold and AA Gold teams play Sunday against Eel River Valley Youth Football's A Blue team and AA Blue team, respectively, at Fortuna High School. Game times are 8 a.m. for the A game and 10 a.m. for the AA matchup.

The DNYF A White, AA Blue and AAA teams will compete against their corresponding opponents from Redwood Youth Football at St. Bernard's Catholic School in Eureka. Games times are 10 a.m. for the A matchup, noon for the AA game and 2 p.m. for the AA game.

Systemic changes have come to Del Norte Youth Football in the form of offensive and defensive schemes.

Del Norte High School head football coach Ray Rook and his staff have taught the youth football coaches the Warriors' schemes. The goal of the endeavor is to completely immerse Del Norte athletes in Warriors football gameplay and terminology by the time DNYF players are of high school age.

"We feel it's all gone as planned," said Collin Thomas, head coach of the DNYF AAA squad. (Thomas is an employee in the Del Norte Triplicate's circulation department.)

"All of our coaches were able to make the meetings or be in contact if they had questions. As long as the coaches understand it, it makes it easier for the players to understand.

"Our goal for the coaches and the high school coaches is, we want to see all 31 (AAA players) play four more years of football."

The area children (ages 8andndash;14) playing on DNYF football teams are learning the game the Del Norte Way.
