Del Norte places third in home tourney

The Del Norte High girls golf team posted its second-best score of the 2012 season at home, taking third place in the fifth Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 League tournament of the season at the par-71 Del Norte Golf Course Thursday.

The Warriors' top five golfers combined to shoot 586 on the day, behind tournament champion McKinleyville (534) and runner-up Arcata (551). Eureka (620) and Fortuna (621) took fourth and fifth places, respectively.

"Thursday was another step in the right direction, but we still have our sights on finishing second in one of the next two tournaments," assistant coach James Haban said.

Freshman Siera Fitzhugh carded Del Norte's best score on the day, a 35-over 106, good for seventh place overall. The score represented her best round of the season.

"I started out good with my irons," Fitzhugh said. "Then I started to hit my driver good."

Sophomore Bailee Jones also posted a season best (107, eighth place), with an efficient 15-over 51 on the last nine holes.

"I was just hoping for under 110," Jones said. "It was just a good day."

Junior Brooke Trujillo (112, 10th place) and senior Amber Preston (124, 15th) cracked the top 15, and Hailie Thompson (137, 23rd place) was the Warriors' final scorer on the day.

Alicia Fender (141), Taylor Shanley (160), Morgan Gibson (160) and Haylee Hardy (160) also competed for Del Norte.

Eureka's Ashley Gutierrez earned medalist honors with a six-over 77.

Del Norte Golf Course played slow on the day, as clouds and moisture hung in the air throughout the afternoon.

The Warriors compete next at Baywood Golf and Country Club in Arcata on Thursday at noon.
