The Del Norte High girls basketball team can add another line to its developing pre-season resume: Tournament champions.

The Warriors closed out the Mt. Shasta Tournament in Mt. Shasta with their third win in three days, defeating Weed, 49-35, on Saturday.

"Winning the championship was a big step for our program," Del Norte head coach Mike Ernest said. "(The Warriors) are really excited about it."

Brittany Maready scored 18 points to pace the Warriors, and Emma Card contributed 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds in the victory.

Del Norte (5-2 overall) held a 20-16 halftime lead before outscoring the Cougars 14-6 in the third quarter.

The Warriors led by as many as 14 points early in the fourth quarter before, as Ernest said, "we forgot what brought us there," and Weed cut into the lead.

"We executed great offensively," Ernest said. "We just didn't finish. We missed a lot of easy buckets. I call those killer shots ... successful teams make those little shots."

Del Norte was able to adjust, drawing fouls and hitting free throws to bring the score up to its final margin.

In Brookings, the Warriors boys finished the two-day Brookings-Harbor Invitational as champions with a 51-38 victory over Phoenix (Ore.) Saturday.

"I'm just really proud," Del Norte head coach Blaine Lopez said. "They showed a ton of improvement from last weekend to this weekend."

The Pirates kept pace with the Warriors for much of the contest before Del Norte pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Phoenix 17-8.

As they expect to do for much of this season, Del Norte (2-3 overall) won because of tight man-to-man defense andwinning the battle for timely rebounds.

"Defensively we did a

really good job," Lopez said. "Our rebounding was so much better. It's an effort issue, and we got after it (Saturday)."

Steven Maready and Brandon Japp led Del Norte with nine points apiece as six Warriors contributed six or more points.

The Del Norte boys play their first home game of the season tomorrow night against Brookings-Harbor. The freshman game begins the night, at 4:30 p.m., with the junior varsity playing at 6 p.m. and the varsity playing at 7:30 p.m. The Warriors' varsity team defeated the Bruins on Friday night, 42-40, for its first win of the season.

The Del Norte girls play in a three-day tournament in Ukiah beginning Thursday. The Warriors' junior varsity squad (Fortuna) and freshman team (Arcata) are scheduled to participate in two-day tournaments at their respective sites, beginning Friday.
