The Del Norte High boys basketball team dug itself a hole in the opening minutes against Arcata High and never recovered.
Down 13-0 before scoring their first basket, the Warriors rallied in the second quarter but lost all momentum in the second half as the Tigers cruised to a 52-35 victory Friday night at Del Norte High School.
Del Norte rallied in the second quarter to draw within six points, 25-19, at halftime, but Arcata outscored the Warriors 15-6 in the third quarter, putting the kibosh on any comeback attempt.
The Tigers (15-4 overall, 4-0 Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 Conference) used its size advantage over Del Norte (6-9, 1-3 HDN Big 5) to draw fouls on offense. The Tigers converted those fouls into 22 free throws on 27 attempts.
Warriors junior Aaron Fitch scored a team-high 14 points and attempted all seven of Del Norte's free throws in the game. (He made six.) Junior point guard Jesus Herrera set a career high with seven points and kickstarted the Warriors' offense in the first half with his passing and decisionmaking.
Latrell Wilson's 15 points paced Arcata.
All three Warriors boys basketball teams lost to the Tigers on Wednesday night, with the junior varsity squad (5-12 overall, 1-3 HDN Big 5) falling 62-44 to Arcata and the Del Norte freshman team (7-2 overall, 3-1 HDN Big 5) losing a fourth-quarter lead in a 50-44 defeat.
The Warriors look to snap a five-game home losing strike on Tuesday for a nonleague matchup against Ferndale High. Junior varsity play begins at 4:30 p.m., with the varsity game beginning at 6 p.m.
Arcata 54, Del Norte 39
Brittany Maready scored 18 points as the Del Norte girls basketball team dropped its fourth consecutive game at Arcata on Thursday night.
The Warriors (8-9 overall, 0-4 HDN Big 5) trailed by seven points at the half before the Tigers (13-3 overall, 3-1 HDN Big 5) exploded for 23 points in the third quarter to Del Norte's five.
"We just turned the ball over," Warriors head coach Mike Ernest said. "They came out in their press, and we just didn't handle it. We gave them too many second chance opportunities on the offensive end. We weren't blocking out, we weren't rebounding on the defensive end."
Del Norte travels to Ferndale on Wednesday evening to face the Wildcats. Junior varsity play begins at 4:30 p.m., with the varsity game beginning at 6 p.m.
