Del Norte's cadre of six junior wrestlers combined for 22 team points at the California Interscholastic Federation North Coast Section Wrestling Championships, held Friday and Saturday in Newark.
The Warriors finished in a tie for 52nd place in the team standings, with no individual placers. De La Salle High of Concord won the team title with 253 points, 16.5 ahead of runner-up James Logan High of Union City.
"Overall, (the kids) did all right," Del Norte assistant coach Clint Schaad said. "Some of those matches, a few of those we were winning and got thrown on back and pinned. In that tournament, you don't get a second chance."
At 152 pounds, Hawk Mattz defeated Jeremy Thornton of Sir Francis Drake High (San Anselmo), 6-0, before losing to Healdsburg High's Ian Black in a 6-2 decision.
Mattz defeated McKinleyville High's Tanner King, 11-4, in his first consolation match before losing to Albany High's Garon Pelesauma in an 8-4 decision.
"Both his losses were to kids that placed," Schaad said. "Hawk was turned at the very end to lose; he was winning that last match."
Robert Boulby, competing at 145 pounds, exited the winner's bracket early when Louis Desprez of Foothill High (Pleasanton) pinned him in 2:50. Boulby rebounded with an 11-2 major decision over Albany High's Nathan Greco; his run ended against Lower Lake High's Erick Moreno, 9-6.
"He got taken down and turned in a cradle in the last round," Schaad said. "He had a small lapse in judgment and intensity; it cost him for five (points)."
Eric Turner was pinned in his opening match at 160 pounds by Novato High's Austin Ball (3:39). Turner defeated Wyatt Jones of Middletown High by fall in 4:39, pitting him against Kelseyville High's Aaron Copsey. Copsey pinned Turner in 53 seconds. Del Norte's David Plechaty pinned his opening-round opponent at 195 pounds, Joshua Carter of John Swett High (Crockett), by fall in 49 seconds, before losing his next two matches.
Skiler Haddad (126 pounds) went 1-2 at NCS, defeating Lower Lake High's Ricardo Cuevas by fall in 3:43. Heavyweight Cristian Puente went 1-2, his lone win coming by forfeit in the consolation round.
Warriors sophomore Nicole Mattz lost her only contested match in the 108-pound bracket at the CIF State Girls Wrestling Championships, held Friday and Saturday in Lemoore.
Mattz lost by fall to eventual champion Gabby Garcia of Valencia High in 1:35. She then forfeited her second match against Delano High's Kaylene Cabral.
"I'm not sure what happened in that (forfeited) match," Schaad said.
