Middle School Basketball: DN’s own bracket busters

Five basketball teams made up of Del Norte County middle-schoolers placed in the top three at the 3rd Annual South Coast Sharks Shootout in Coos Bay, Ore., on March 16.

The Crescent City Merchants seventh-grade boys team, coached by Chris Poole and Gene Mitchell, finished second in its division. Richie England was named most outstanding defensive player at the tournament, with Mason Mitchell and Cole Harper earning all-tournament honors.

The Del Norte Warriors fifth-grade boys team, coached by Frank Dowd, also earned a second-place finish.

The Crescent City Cougars eight-grade boys team, coached by Mark Slayton, finished third in its division. Dayton Skeen of the Cougars earned an all-tournament selection for his play.

The Crescent City Cougars sixth-grade and seventh-grade girls teams placed third in their respective divisions. Both teams are coached by John and Mark Horner. Peyton Healy (seventh-grade), Erin Wellman (seventh-grade) and Shelby Horner (sixth-grade) were named all-tournament players.

The Crescent City Cougars sixth- and seventh-grade girls teams, the Crescent City Merchants and the Del Norte Warriors all play this weekend at a tournament in Redding.
