The Del Norte High track and field team sized itself up against the best of the Humboldt-Del Norte League on Wednesday afternoon and came out in good shape.

The Warriors finished second in the girls' standings and third in the boys standings at the first HDN League meet of the season, held at Fortuna High School in Fortuna. Point totals for both teams were unavailable at press time.

"The majority of kids improved on their marks and distances. That's always encouraging," Del Norte head coach Samuel Escobar said. "The other thing that we saw was, we moved kids around because we want to see if they have talent in other events. That gives us some information."

The HDN meet also included a freshman/sophomore division for boys teams, in which Del Norte took first place. (Point totals were unavailable at press time.) Escobar said that the league had not implemented such a division in "at least five years."

"The league has established an opportunity to get kids to compete against each other," Escobar said.

At the varsity level, the Warriors had three event champions and one relay champion.

Senior Katelynn Rowe blazed through the 200-meter dash in 26.99 seconds, her first victory ever in that sprint. Rowe also took third place in the 400 (1:02.56).

Sophomore Kayla Costello ran a personal-best 46.98 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles to win the event. Costello, Rowe, Maddie Critz and Rachel Rowe joined forces later on to win the 4x100-meter relay (52.07).

Del Norte sophomore Chad Bell cleared 6 feet even in the high jump for the first time to win that event Wednesday. Bell also took second in the 100 meters (11.82) and long jump (18-3.5) and finished fourth at 200 meters (24.35).

Joely Tynes placed second in the high jump (4-8) and fifth in the triple jump (28-4). Kira Standring recorded a discus throw of 88-11 for third place in the event. Critz finished fifth in the 300 hurdles (53.36).

For the boys, Dalton Alexandre scored a pair of runner-up finishes in the 400 (54.81) and the 300 hurdles (43.61), also taking third in the 110 hurdles (17.17). Hunter Mattz ran the 3,200 meters in 11:27.91 for second place, and Victor Martinez finished second in the pole vault (10-6) and fourth in the 110 hurdles (17.91).

Del Norte's event winners in the freshman/sophomore boys division were: Samuel Aragones, long jump (16-2) and triple jump (36-1.5), Jonathon Martinez, 300 hurdles (17.74), and the 4x100 relay (Anthony Jackson, Adrian Henderson, Aragones, Cameron Cain; 49.12) and the 4x400 relay (Cain, Omar Leal, Marcus Henderson, Victor De Los Santos; 4:06.60).

The Warriors continue their season on Saturday, April 6, at 10 a.m. at the Brookings-Harbor Rotary Invitational meet in Brookings.
