The boys golf team race in the Humboldt-Del Norte League has a clear front-runner and a few outside contenders.
Eureka High is presently the class of the conference, with a combined team score of 2,001 strokes through five tournaments. Del Norte High, at 2,218 strokes, lags behind McKinleyville High (2,199 strokes) and St. Bernard's Catholic High (2,204) but has significant room to improve.
"Hopefully we can try to go for that second spot," freshman Kobie Lockwood said. "If we play good in the last couple tournaments, we can do it."
The Warriors get their first chance in Monday's tournament at Del Norte Golf Course, which begins at 11 a.m. It is Del Norte's first home tournament of the year and its third remaining tournament scheduled for the 2013 season.
The Warriors boast two of the top 10 individuals in HDN play this season.
Lockwood is presently atop the league leaderboard with a combined individual placement in HDN tournaments of 15.
Warriors senior Anthony Kravitz is in 10th place, with a combined placement of 46.
Lockwood stands a good chance at improving his standing within the league Monday, at his de facto home course.
"I always try to shoot under par, even though it hardly ever happens," Lockwood said. "(I need to) hit a lot of greens in regulation - that's what I always try to do at all my tournaments."
