High winds and choppy conditions made most anglers sit out the first day of ocean salmon fishing, which was Wednesday on the North Coast, and high winds and seas might continue through the weekend. Check conditions before hitting the water.

Ocean forecast off Crescent City

According to reports from commercial fishermen, ocean conditions are ripe for great sport fishing this summer season.

Indicators like birds and whales feeding and lots of shrimp caught offshore show that "the ocean is very healthy out there right now," said Chris Hegnes of Englund Marine Supply.

The big picture

About 1.6 million chinook salmon are predicted to be in the ocean this year with a forecast of 727,600 Klamath River fall-run chinooks, the third-highest on record. Some 834,000 adult Sacramento River fall-run chinooks are predicted to be in the ocean.

Anglers should be ready to catch the big ones, as a large portion of the predicted Klamath fish, 331,200, are 4-year-old chinooks, more than four times the amount of 4-year-olds in the forecast last year.

Englund Marine fishing contest

Once again, Englund Marine Supply in Crescent City Harbor will be awarding one rod-and-reel combo each to the angler who catches the biggest salmon and the biggest lingcod of the season.

Rogue River, lower

Fishing for spring chinook salmon has reportedly slowed down on the lower Rogue, presumably from warm water and low flows, according to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's recreation report.

On Sunday, Brookings-basedguide Andy Martin of Wild Rivers Fishing put his clients on two monster chinooks using an anchovy combined with a size 4 gold Hilderbrandt spinner blade.

"A few steelhead are being picked up by bank anglers throwing spinners or flies, but it won't be until late May or early June that the Rogue sees the first good push of summer steelhead."

"Surfperch fishing is just getting started at the mouth of the Rogue," the report said.
