Del Norte Little League's softball teams have proven highly competitive in Oregon District 8 - their new home district as of this season andshy;- and at the Oregon state level.

In addition to the 11andndash;12 Softball All-Stars finishing fifth at the Oregon State Little League Tournament, the Del Norte Senior (ages 13andndash;15) Softball All-Stars tied for sixth place in their respective tournament, which took place July 12andndash;16 in Scappoose, Ore.

The Senior Warriors won one game and lost three during the state tournament, eventually won by Portland/Powell/Taborvilla Little League of Portland.

"The girls did good," Del Norte head coach Tony Bruschi said. "We just had a hard time at state. The competition was good.

"Half the girls (on the team) are coming back next year. They know what to expect now."

The Senior All-Stars endured a difficult first day of competition on July 12. Del Norte lost its opening game to South Salem/Sprague Little League (Salem, Ore.), 5-2. The Warriors' second game was held at 7 p.m. that night; they would lose, 21-6, to Peninsula Little League of Portland.

Del Norte struck back in its third game, on July 13, defeating Bend South Little League (Bend, Ore.) 15-1. The Warriors needed one more win to advance into bracket play, but Pendleton (Ore.) Little League stopped them in a 10-0 defeat.

With ample downtime between games, the Senior All-Stars participated in many activities together off the diamond.

"It was a little hot for the girls but we had a great time," Bruschi said. "We went to the batting cages for a day. We camped out; the girls got

really close.

"They'd like to give it a second chance."

Team members include Karina Moseley, Gianna Sandoval, Kashawna Coffee, Grace Bruschi, Preslynn Shaw, Caitlyn Herrera-Kelly, Kallie Roth, Jacobi Cox, Hannah Cox, Mariah Norbury and Roberta Peters.

The Senior Softball All-Stars and the 11andndash;12 Softball All-Stars became Del Norte's first Oregon District 8 champions after Del Norte joined up with the league in January, splitting from California District 26.
