The Del Norte High football team could not spend much time licking its wounds from a sound defeat Aug. 31.

After all, Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 League opponent McKinleyville High awaits the Warriors at Mike Whalen Field on Friday. The junior varsity game begins at 5 p.m., with the varsity game to follow at 7:30 p.m.

Del Norte enters the game 0-1 overall after falling 49-0 to West Valley High in Cottonwood. The Warriors had 107 yards of total offense and lost two fumbles in the contest.

"Although we lost by a large margin, we don't want the young men to be discouraged," Warriors assistant head coach Jeremy Lacy said. "We played an extremely good team. We didn't play well; we didn't play up to our potential."

On the field, the Del Norte coaching staff has made some personnel tweaks defensively, most notably shifting senior Jordan Carpenter to middle linebacker. West Valley rushed for 267 yards on the Warriors, racking up 351 yards in all.

McKinleyville also enters Friday's contest having lost its first game, 20-7, to Fort Bragg High. Del Norte defeated the Panthers on Sept. 14, 2012, for its only HDN Big 5 victory of last season.

Six new members of the Del Norte High School Athletic Hall of Fame will be formally inducted at halftime of the varsity contest. They are: Ston Yackamouih (class of 1957; football, basketball, baseball), Bob Case (class of 1966; football, basketball, baseball), Colleen Suva (class of 1973; track and field, gymnastics), Leticia Alcala (class of 1983; basketball, softball), Khalilah Terry (class of 1994; volleyball, basketball) and coach Tex Gatlin (1950andndash;66; football, basketball).

Members of the DNHS Athletic Hall of Fame committee will be hosting a tailgate before Friday's game to raise money for a permanent display of Hall of Fame members inside the high school.
