A controversial late goal resulted in defeat for the Del Norte boys soccer team at McKinleyville on Wednesday, while the Warrior girls were also narrowly defeated.

Getting second-half goals from Alberto Barraza and Jesus Herrera, the Warrior boys were locked in a 2-2 tie until a late corner-kick goal for McKinleyville that was originally waved off because the ball appeared to cross the goal line before landing in front of the net.

After the referees conferred, the goal was allowed.

Still, coach David Sanyaolu said he was impressed with his players' "competitive spirit."

Meanwhile, the Warrior girls battled to a scoreless tie in the first half and were the aggressors for much of the second half but still lost 1-0.

"McKinleyville was all over us in the first half, but we had our chances in the second half," said coach Clar Byers. "It was good to see us step up."

Both teams host Eureka today, with the boys game starting at 11 a.m. and girls game at 1 p.m.
