The Del Norte High girls tennis team posted its first win of the season Wednesday, winning at Fortuna, 6-3.

"I was pleased with how the girls played in the gusty winds at Fortuna," said coach Jane Rumiano. They moved well, forced their opponents to make mistakes and took advantage of their own strengths to win. Everyone is improving, and I expect them to continue to do so for the rest of the season."

Among the players Rumiano singled out for praise was Debbie Yang, who "played a great match at No. 2, defeating her opponent with spin serves that moved her off the court, then passing her down the line."

No. 3 singles player Alexis Wright "played tenacious tennis, running down shots and using good strategy to outwit her opponent," Rumiano said.

And No. 4 Raili Makela "played very aggressively, hitting beautiful volleys to win her match."
