The Del Norte High girls tennis team won its second match of the season Saturday at St. Bernard's, 7-2.

"Overall I was very pleased with the girls' performance," said coach Jane Rumiano. "They had an opportunity to use skills we'd worked on in practice, mostly slice and spin, to defeat St. Bernard's."

Rumiano singled out several people for praise, including No. 1 singles player Jordan Babich, who won 6-1, 6-3 over Kate Harvey.

"Jordan played a great match, playing conservative tennis - getting in all of her first serves and playing high percentage shots."

No. 2 singles player Debbie Yang "took advantage of her left-hand serve to move her opponent wide to open up the court for passing shots to win her match" by 6-3, 6-2 over Mileena Maki.

No. 3 player Alexis Wright "kept things exciting by taking each of her sets to a tie-break, but she dominated those to win" over Kendall Petrusha, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4).

No. 4 Raili Makela "had difficulties getting her serve in because of the wind in her first set, but figured it out and won easily in the second set" over Yvonne Chen, 7-5, 6-1.

And No. 5 Panhia Yang "came back to win her match in a tie-breaker that had her fighting the gusty wind as much as her opponent," emerging with an 8-7 (5) victory over Cying Lu.

No. 6 Marine Henry lost to Letitia Resendez, 5-8.

In doubles, Del Norte's No. 1 team, Babich/Wright, lost toHarvey/Maki, 3-8.

The No. 2 team, Yang/Yang, won by default, and the No. 3 team, Makela/Henry, defeated Lu/Resendez, 8-6.

The Warriors' next match is today at home againstMcKinleyville at 3:30 p.m. And a home match against Eureka originally scheduled for Saturday has been moved to Thursday at 2:30 p.m. so players can take their SATs on Saturday.
