Del Norte can't score on Arcata

The Del Norte High girls and boys soccer teams could not muster a goal in home games against Arcata on Saturday, the girls falling 6-0 and the boys 10-0.

The Warrior girls played the highly ranked Tigers on even terms for the first 15 minutes before falling behind 4-0 at the half.

"Our girls hung in there," said coach Clar Byers. "We stepped up the defense and stayed composed."

Arcata, which is unbeaten in Humboldt-Del Norte League play, had eight corner kicks in the first half and scored on one of them.

In the second half, Del Norte stole the ball but missed a wide open shot that would have given the Warriors their first goal.

Byers sees his team improving as it prepares for a rematch with Ferndale on the road Wednesday at 5 p.m. Del Norte lost to Ferndale earlier this season, 2-0. On the other hand, Ferndale lost to Arcata 12-1 in an earlier game, Byers noted.

The Warrior girls are 3-7 for the season.

After sustaining the shutout loss Saturday, the Warrior boys do not play again until Saturday at home against McKinleyville.

"We went up against a very solid team, but generally it was not a good performance from our team," said boys coach David Sanyaolu. "The majority of play was in our half (of the field), resulting in lots of pressure on our defense and that oftentimes resulted in goals.

"The game, result aside, does not reflect our worth, as I told the boys. We are better than that. So we need to get back to basics, namely, good ball control, progressive passing and on-field communication."
