Jesus Herrera scored three goals and the Del Norte High boys soccer team rebounded from a two-goal halftime deficit at home to defeat McKinleyville 4-3 on Monday afternoon.
At the half, the Warriors trailed 3-1 despite getting a goal by Herrera, assisted by a solo run down the right flank by Alberto Barraza.
In the second half, Juan Alvarado scored on a long-range high ball that was shot from outside the box and dipped over the goalkeeper to pull Del Norte to 3-2.
Herrera then scored again on a combination goal with Juan Alvarado to tie the game at 3-3. Herrera completed the hat trick with his third goal, a well-placed shot inside the box assisted by Geovany Ramirez, to win the game, 4-3.
"This was a much-needed morale-boosting victory for our team after a string of consecutive defeats, and more so due to how we came back," said Del Norte coach David Sanyaolu. "We showed our attacking ability in the way we scored and our midfield and defense were more solid than in previous games.
The result of the Del Norte girls game against McKinleyville will be reported in Thursday's edition. Both teams travel to Eureka on Wednesday.
