With the Del Norte High girls tennis team clinging to a 4-3 lead at Arcata, Tuesday's contest came down to the final two doubles matches.
The Warrior teams of Debbie Yang and Panhia Yang, and Raili Makela and Marine Henry, won them both to take the match, 6-3.
"Debbie and Panhia Yang and Marine Henry all won both their singles and doubles matches in a convincing fashion, determined to do whatever it took to make their opponents make mistakes and set themselves up for winners," said coach Jane Rumiano.
Del Norte's No. 1 singles player, Jordan Babich, fell to Hannah Mathew, 4-6, 2-6. No. 2 Debbie Yang beat Hanna Burnett, 6-4, 6-2.
No. 3 Alexis Wright "had a memorable come-from-behind match, where she won long rallies by setting up her opponent, then hitting good passing shots or lobs," Rumiano said. Wright won 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, over Kenai Momao-Hugo.
No. 4 Makela lost her singles match to Kendall Boyett, 6-7 (7), 6-7 (7).
"Raili had a close two-set tiebreak match, which was a big improvement over her performance in the previous match against Arcata," Rumiano said.
No. 5 Panhia Yang beat Anna Nelson 8-1, while No. 6 Henry defeated Kayla Curtis, 8-3.
In doubles, the No. 1 team of Babich/Wright lost to Burnett/Mathew, 1-8. The No. 2 team of Yang/Yang beat Momoa-Hugo/Boyett, 8-2, and the No. 3 team of Makela/Henry defeated Nelson/Curtis, 8-1.
"The match started in extremely windy conditions, which changed to merely cloudy with gusts, but the girls dealt with the weather well," said Rumiano. "I was impressed with the improvement in the play by both teams' players and happy to see that the Lady Warriors could match the Arcata team in both skills and strategy."
Del Norte's next match will be at home Saturday at 10 a.m. against North Coast Prep.
