The Del Norte girls soccer team traveled to Brookings, Ore., on Saturday for some non-league competition. The Warriors played a competitive match, but fell 2-0 to the Bruins.

"Overall, it was a really fun game," said girls soccer coach Clar Byers. "I think all the girls enjoyed themselves. Brookings is a good group of girls to play against. They are learning too. It is just fun to play with teams that are just enjoying the game."

Byers said the teams looked evenly matched, with both teams creating some good scoring chances.

"It was kind of an offensive struggle, just trying to finish," Byers said. "We were up there and striking on goal. We were getting to their defense, but we just weren't putting enough power on the ball to get it past the keeper, or missing proper placement."

Brookings was able to break the scoreless tie in the first half. The Bruins had a corner kick and the girl was holding the corner flag while she kicked the ball into the penalty box.

"It looked, at that point, that we were going to get the first one cleared out," Byers said. "I don't know because they stopped the play."

After the stoppage, Brookings was given another corner kick and they snuck the ball into the goal near the back post for a 1-0 lead.

The Bruins added to that lead in the second half when a Brookings player dribbled the ball through the Del Norte defense and put it in the back of the net.

The Warriors also had several opportunities to score. Del Norte's best opportunity came in the first half.

"We had a beautiful three-pronged attack that came through on the right side," Byers said. "It got passed into the middle and passed over to the back post and we kick it in."

Unfortunately for the Warriors, the offside flag when up and the goal was disallowed.

The Del Norte girls will be back in action on Wednesday, playing South Fork at home at 5:30 p.m. after the boys game.
