Another win over Fortuna

The Del Norte High tennis team picked up another victory Tuesday, topping Fortuna 7-2 at home.

"The girls all moved well, played aggressively, and had a plan as to how they were going to play before going into their matches," said head coach Jane Rumiano.

The 7-2 victory is a slight improvement over the 6-3 win that Del Norte recorded when the girls traveled to Fortuna in September.

"I feel like we improved from the last time that we played," said Del Norte senior Panhia Yang. "From the beginning of the season, we have all improved in the little things and the big things. I feel like the team has taken one step further."

Yang had a nearly perfect day. She beat Fortuna's Katrina DeVere 8-0 in her singles match.

"I feel like I placed the ball more accurately than the last time I played her," Yang said.

"I was also serving better than last time."

After the singles victory, Panhia teamed up with Debbie Yang to beat Katie Holland and Coleen Sandberg 8-1 in doubles.

"My partner did good at the net," Panhia Yang said. "I was pretty proud of her. Today we didn't communicate as much as we normally do. We usually play better, but we got the win."

The Warriors won five of the six singles matches. Debbie Yang (6-2, 6-4), Alexis Wright (6-3, 6-1), Raili Makela (6-1, 6-0) and Marine Henry (8-4) all pulled out comfortable victories.

"It's difficult to single out any particular players, because I was pleased with each girl's effort, including Jordan (Babich), who experimented with different strokes and strategies in her match," Rumiano said.

Babich, Del Norte's No. 1 player, took on Angela Gearhart, who is the top tennis player in the Humbolt-Del Norte Big 5 and is undefeated in league play this season. Gearhart took the match 6-0, 6-0.

Gearhart played a hand in both losses that the Warriors suffered against Fortuna. She helped the Fortuna No. 1 doubles team to a tight 8-6 victory over Babich and Wright.

The Warriors won both of the remaining doubles matches, however, with Yang/Yang winning 8-0 and Makela/Henry taking the match 8-4.

"The highlight of the overall match was again the doubles, when the Del Norte players worked well as teams to defeat their opponents," Rumiano said.

The Del Norte girls tennis team will be back in action against St. Bernard's at home on Tuesday, Oct. 22. It will be the Warriors' last home match this season.
