The Del Norte volleyball team got back on the winning track on Thursday with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-11) victory over McKinleyville on the road.

The win improves the Warriors to 21-9-1 overall and 5-1 in the Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 conference.

Del Norte was reeling from a 3-1 loss to Arcata on Tuesday, the Warriors' first league loss of the season. The team was able to show some improvement on the road, however.

"It was better. We did a really good job of forcing McKinleyville to commit errors, but then we didn't really capitalize on them," said Del Norte coach Pablo Lorenzi. "We would turn around and commit an error right back instead of getting the kill. We are still working on that, but we did a better job of committing less unforced errors."

The Warriors faced a fired up opponent in McKinleyville, which was celebrating senior night in the match.

"Usually on senior night, the seniors come out all pumped up," Lorenzi said. "We made a little run at the beginning, then they came back and tied it 8-8. Then we opened up the gap by three, and we stayed ahead the rest of the way."

Lorenzi was pleased by junior Kayla Costello's performance from the right side. Costello finished the game tied for the team lead with senior Kaitlyn Clemann. Both girls had 12 kills.

Senior Ashton Smedley also played well in the middle. Smedley recorded 10 kills and three more blocks.

"She was really effective in the middle," Lorenzi said. "We havebeen trying to make the middle more effective

and that takes the pressure off of the outside people. That was a real plus for us."

Junior Samantha Lundin dished out 15assists and served four aces in the game for the Warriors.

Del Norte will be back at home on Wednesday for senior night against Eureka. The game against Eureka was originally scheduled for Thursday but was moved ahead one day because Thursday is Halloween.
