A game that looked like a defensive struggle for the first twelve minutes turned ugly quickly for Del Norte. Fortuna used a 20-0 run, spanning two minutes at the beginning of the second quarter, to run away with a 34-12 victory over the Warriors on Friday in Fortuna.
The first quarter passed without either team putting points on the board, but Fortuna closed out the quarter by taking over on the Del Norte 30-yard line after a 20-yard punt return. The Huskies drove the ball down to the Warriors 9-yard line before the beginning of the second quarter.
Two plays into the second quarter, Fortuna got on the board on a 6-yard touchdown catch by Dominic Eastburn.
The Huskies struck again just 19 seconds later. Fortuna kicked an onside kick that bounced over the Del Norte front line, and the Huskies were able to recover it at the Del Norte 38-yard line. Two rushing plays later, Fortuna had a 13-0 lead.
On the ensuing possession, Warrior quarterback Stevie Maready threw an interception on third down and seven. For the third possession in a row Fortuna took control of the ball deep in Del Norte territory, and the Huskies took a 20-0 lead on the very next play andshy;andshy;andshy;andshy;- a 28-yard touchdown pass to Eastburn for his second touchdown of the day.
After falling behind by 20, the Warrior offense finally began to move the football.Del Norte took over the ball on the27-yard line and marched 62 yards downfield with four first downs. The Del Norte drive would stall, however, and the Warriors turned the ball over on downs after an incomplete pass on fourth down.
Fortuna stayed hot in the second half, taking the opening kickoff 65 yards, burning nearly five minutes off the clock and putting the game out of reach 27-0.
Senior Dylan Pease finally helped the Warriors reach the end zone late in the third quarter. Pease picked off a Fortuna pass at the 15-yard line. Two plays later, he threw a 23-yard pass to Josiah Johnson for the senior's first touchdown catch of the season.
Humberto Cortez caught his first touchdown pass of the year from Maready with 31 seconds left in the game.
