Humboldt and Del Norte middle school teams gather for round robin on Saturday
Middle school girls basketball teams from around Del Norte and Humboldt counties met in Crescent City on Saturday for a round robin-style competition.
Crescent Elk, Redwood, McKinleyville and Zane from Eureka all sent an eighth grade and a seventh grade team to the round robin. Winship in Eureka sent only a seventh grade team and Smith River had just an eighth grade team.
It was a day full of difficult competition for the young players.
The Crescent Elk eighth grade team kick off the tournament against Zane. The Cougars were 12-1 coming into the tournament with their only loss coming at the hands of Zane in a championship game earlier in the season. Crescent Elk had previously beaten Zane in a different tournament championship.
On Saturday, Zane got the better of Crescent Elk in the tie breaker, pulling out a 47-36 victory in the Four Square Gym.
The Cougars rebounded with a strong game against McKinleyville in the second of two back-to-back games.
Crescent Elk eighth grader Payten Healy caught fire against McKinleyville, scoring nine first quarter points and finishing the game with 23 and a handful of assists as well.
The Crescent Elk seventh grade team lost all three of its games.
