The Del Norte boys team won its final two games at the Yreka Tournament over the weekend, including a 52-29 victory over host Yreka in the consolation championship, to take third place.

"For the first weekend, especially with not much practice time, I thought we played okay," said head coach Blaine Lopez. "Our execution wasn't great, but that will hopefully get a lot better as we get going. I thought for the most part we did a good job effort wise, and that is all I asked of them. We didn't always know what was going on, but I thought the kids played hard ... We did all the things that we need to do to try to be successful."

The Warriors (2-1) had just three full team practices under their belt before playing Brookings-Harbor to open the tournament. After losing the first game, Del Norte faced a much larger opponent in Klamath Union.

"Klamath Union was huge," Lopez said. "They were way bigger and stronger, but we won the game because we were a little bit scrappier. It seemed like we got every loose ball, we took a bunch of charges, we just did all the dirty work and out-hustled them. We had a bunch of kids step up and get after it."

Sophomores Austin Healy and Joey Godla played well, helping solidify a permanent spot on the varsity roster.

"They kind of helped me make the decision," Lopez said. "I thought both sophomores played fairly well. It is hard to say, it is just one weekend and they are still sophomores, but they have looked good so far."
