Del Norte girls basketball look to continue to improve in HDN Big 5

The Del Norte girls basketball team got off to a 6-4 start to the season before winter break. The Warriors have traveled to three tournaments this year, finishing second in Yreka and taking third in Phoenix and Brookings-Harbor.

The early season was a learning process for the Del Norte girls, as the players have been getting used to first-year head coach Jeff Cook, and Cook has been getting used to coaching varsity girls, after spending five years as the boys JV coach.

"We have played 10 games and I have gotten to see a lot," Cook said. "We have had overtime games, close games that we have won, close games that we have lost, we have blown teams out and we have been blown out. I got to see the girls in a lot of different situations. So far, I am pretty impressed with them."

Del Norte isn't concerned with its wins and loss recordjust yet. Cook and the Warriors have had their eye on Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 league play since the season kicked off in late November, viewing their early games as preaseason competition.

"Everything so far has just been to get ready for the league and they know that," Cook said. "Yeah, we want to win these preseason games, but it is not really a priority."

Cook said that he has been most impressed by the amount of improvement the Warriors have shown defensively early this year. Still, Del Norte has a ways to go on both sides of the ball before they get to where Cook would like them to be.

"We definitely aren't there yet, but I am thinking we are going to compete in the league," Cook said. "I honestly haven't ever really watched the girls play too many league games. From what I hear it is pretty intense."

Cook expects more of the same this year in what figures to be a fairly balanced league.

"Everyone sounds like they are pretty good this year," Cook said. "It doesn't sound like there is a weak team in the league.

League has almost arrived for Del Norte. The Warriors will travel to Brandon on Jan. 3 for a two-day tournament to get back in the swing of things. Then Del Norte will host Arcata on Jan. 10.
