The Del Norte High girls basketball team is in search of its first league win as it prepares to host McKinleyville Wednesday in a Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 league matchup.

The Warriors are 8-5, but fell to Arcata in their first league game. McKinleyville comes in with a 9-5 record. The Panthers also lost their league opener, 54-46 at Eureka.

Outside of its record, McKinleyville is a bit of a mystery to the Warriors.

"I haven't really heard that much about McKinleyville," said first-year Del Norte head coach Jeff Cook. "It is kind of nice, not knowing, because we have just been working on a little of everything right now."

Del Norte has been especially working on its offense after struggling to put up points in its first league contest.

"We are working on our shooting and taking care of the ball," Cook said. "I think if we do that, we will compete."

Cook also thought that his team's nerves played a big role against Arcata.

"We hopefully got the first-game jitters out," Cook said.

"I told them, 'It's basketball, lets keep it simple.' I know most of them aren't basketball players and they have other things on their mind, but while we are playing basketball for that hour and a half, we just need to think about basketball, not volleyball."

The varsity is scheduled to take the floor at 7:30 p.m.. The freshmen will kick off play at 4 p.m. followed by the junior varsity at 6 p.m.
